THE REAL REVIEW  – HUON HOOKE

Deep colour with a mere trace of purple remaining; the bouquet shows polished leather and earthy/wood-panelling aromas, dried mushrooms, dried herbs and mint as well, very savoury and regional, with a peculiarly Hunter style of pepperiness. It’s full-bodied and quite powerful: a classic Hunter style, chockablock with personality.

09 APR 2023 – HUON HOOKE

Our hunter harvest started in earnest with our
Chardonnay. Despite the hot conditions, post
Christmas, we picked the first grapes on the 28th of
January, four days later than last year. 2009 is a
fantastic year for Hunter Semillon the conditions
being perfect for great fruit intensity whilst
maintaining elegance and length of flavour- real
keepers!
Our first Shiraz came in perfect ripeness and flavour,
on the 12th of February. This is going to be one
fantastic Hunter Shiraz, with excellent ageing
potential.

Our Coquun (Hunter River) Shiraz is produced from
the famous ‘Tallawanta’ Vineyard planted in 1920.
These 90 year old vines produce tiny quantities of
intensely flavoured fruit.

Gardens and Harrigan’s Irish Pub, in Broke Road,
Pokolbin formerly owned by the Elliott family is now
leased to Pepper Tree Wines from the now owners,
the Roche family.
Continuously creating outstanding fruit each year,
the vines are dry land grown, thus ensuring low
yields and high quality fruit. The vineyard soil is quite
typical of the Hunter Valley with a mixture of sandy
loam and red volcanic clay.

Halliday WINE COMPANION 2021
The palate still boasts a sizeable ball of cherried,
spicy fruit flavour, the finish then smoky and meaty
and generally savoury. It has mellowed without
losing its shape; in short its (significant) powers of persuasion

This old vine, dry grown, single vineyard wine has
unravelled magnificently this year, revealing a
length, line and clarity of fruit, riding on rails of super
fine tannins and vibrant acidity.
