The best Hunter Shiraz comes from old vines grown on the renowned red clay soils on the foothills of the Brokenback Range.  The Tallawanta vineyard was planted in 1920 by the Elliot family and to this day produces some of the Hunter’s best Shiraz.  These 90 year old vines produce tiny quantities of intensely flavoured fruit.

Medium bodied in style with an unmatched ability to age in the bottle, this 2011 vintage is a wine of great purity, length and longevity – a true Hunter classic.

Our Hunter harvest started later than usual (27th
January) but back to normal in historical terms.
After a mild and wet spring and early summer things
dried up. The cooler than normal weather patterns
have helped the fruit retain good natural acidity
ensuring great balance and length of flavour.
Good rainfall throughout last year has allowed the
vines to return to normal cropping levels (after the
minuscule crops of 2010). Overall a very good
harvest from the Hunter Valley

Tallawanta Vineyard is based at the foothills of the
Brokenback Range in the Hunter Valley between
Hunter Valley Gardens and Harrigan’s irish Pub on
Broke Rd, Pokolbin. This was one of the jewels in the
crown of the Elliott family-owned wine company
and was acquired by the Roche group when it
bought the former Hungerford Hill Wine Village site.
The vineyard is now leased by Pepper Tree for a 10
year term with the option to renew at the end of
that period.

JAMES HALLIDAY - 92 POINTS

Excellent colour. Excellent intensity in the context of the Hunter
Valley style. Flavours of plum, cherry, five spice and minerally
earth. Oak gives the wine’s texture a creaminess without adding
much in the way of flavour; not a bad thing. The finish is satisfying
but not extravagantly long. Solid medium-weight wine. Drink to
2024.
