Some might think that the link between geology and viticulture is tenous but I think that my experience in the wine industry shows that this assumption could not be farther from the truth.
I was born and bred in Sydney and graduated with a first-class honours science degree from Sydney University, majoring in Geology. My PhD studies were focused on Newcastle, the Hunter Valley's largest city and a short drive from some of Australia's most famous vineyards. It was difficult not to be seduced.
I made the decision to invest in my first vineyard in 1982, turning my attention to Mount View, a popular region within the Hunter Valley.
Pepper Tree Wines and Tallavera Grove Vineyard followed, with a winemaking team led by high-profile Hunter Valley 2009 Winemaker of the Year, Jim Chatto.
